Same Chair 6 Ways

The beautiful thing about feature chairs is that you can either chose a fun hero fabric to stand out or a plain pattern for colour cohesion.

One thing we often get asked is a cost comparison between updating and re-upholstering an existing armchair vs. buying a new custom upholstered chair. The short answer is, if the piece is an heirloom or features a fabulous vintage frame then try to recycle with new re-upholstery. If you are simply after a fabric armchair or wingback for a special spot in your home, we generally say that it will cost just the same for a brand new chair.

We love using this Oz Design chair frame because it works in both modern and classic settings. It can come with button back detailing or a plain back, making the same chair look so different depending on how it is styled and upholstered.

  1. Choose your fabric to work with other elements in the room eg. an art-piece, existing scatter cushions, wallpaper or patterned rug.

  2. Determine if you want this chair to be a hero in the room with a fun fabric or if you want it to seamlessly tie the room together.

  3. Keep in mind that scale matters. If it is a large fully upholstered chair than you have more surface area and can afford a larger print. If you are re-upholstering an existing piece with a smaller surface area then stick to a smaller pattern so that you don’t lose the overall effect the fabric is giving.
